Designing for Enchantment
Liam Madden has an undergraduate diploma in fine art printmaking and a degree in graphic design. He brought this knowledge to a postgraduate research project which explores the application of new media technologies in the design for museum visitor experience. The research sets out to explore how contemporary printing materials can function as a medium of enchantment taking visitors by surprise. The combined application of electronic components with responsive inks is pointed at investigating the captivation of an audience through folk theories of magic and enchantment. This research is aimed at exploring the enhancement of the visitor experience of Nano Nagle Place, a 3.7-acre site with a visitor centre located in Douglas Street Cork. This research project uses Nano Nagle place as a case study for the application of design solutions relevant to the contemporary museum. The project was sponsored by South Presentation Centre Ltd and is aimed at contributing to its ongoing exhibition and education programmes.
